Safety and Proper Planning in Staircase Balustrades

Staircase balustrades play a critical role in living spaces in terms of both aesthetics and safety. Accurate dimensioning is of great importance, especially for families with children. At this point, one of the most vital criteria is that the spacing between the posts should not exceed 15 cm. This measurement is the recommended ideal interval for safe use.

Unlike traditional systems, acrylic (plexiglass) staircase balustrades are not calculated by the meter, but rather based on the specific model, color, and quantity of units. While posts are generally placed at 15 cm intervals on flat surfaces, 1 or 2 posts can be applied to each step on staircases. For higher security, especially in areas with children, frequent post placement should be preferred.

Flat Area Application (Landings and Turns)

One of the most critical elements in acrylic balustrade applications is determining the correct spacing between the posts. To establish a secure system, the standard spacing between posts must be maintained at 15 cm. This measurement plays a vital role, particularly regarding child safety. Wider gaps are strictly discouraged, as they increase the risk of a child’s head or body parts getting stuck between the rails. The 15 cm standard is the ideal measurement that aligns with international safety approaches and ensures maximum protection for daily use.

To enhance the durability and structural integrity of the system, at least one main support pillar (newel post) must be used at every starting and ending point. These main pillars ensure proper weight distribution and contribute to the longevity of the balustrade system. Additionally, they increase impact resistance, providing extra security, especially in high-traffic areas.
